AIGA 2024 Design Conference: Margins

Empowering Design Students: Engaging, Creating, & Evaluating with Generative AI

Generative AI is serving a transformative role in design education by offering new methodologies, tools, and perspectives that are not yet mainstream—generative AI can still be found in the margins. These margins are spaces where new pedagogies can flourish, and challenges can be addressed creatively. By embracing these marginal spaces and exploring generative AI, design educators can prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Since this research project is in early stages, I shared the following: early results, practical ways to incorporate generative AI in introductory design courses, how to balance academic integrity with generative AI, and perhaps most importantly, how to frame new technology and remain agile, while critically considering the ethical issues of such technology.

This research presentation was shared in October 2024 at the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA) national conference.

Follow-up research has been presented at WKU’s annual AI conference in February 2025, as well as at a departmental “Lunch and Learn” in May 2025.
